Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the questions I hear most. If yours isn't here, don't hesitate to reach out.
What is functional medicine health coaching?
Functional medicine health coaching is a client-centered approach that helps you understand the root causes of how you're feeling — not just manage symptoms. As your coach, I help you connect the dots between your lifestyle, habits, stress, nutrition, and overall well-being. Together, we create a personalized plan that fits your real life, and I walk beside you as you put it into action.
It's grounded in the principles of functional medicine, which looks at the whole person — body, mind, and environment — rather than treating isolated symptoms.
What's the difference between health coaching and therapy or medical care?
Health coaching is not therapy, counseling, or medical care. I don't diagnose conditions, prescribe treatments, or provide mental health services. What I do is help you take action on the health goals that matter to you — with structure, accountability, and support.
Think of it this way: your doctor or therapist addresses clinical concerns; I help you build the daily habits, mindset shifts, and lifestyle changes that support your overall well-being. Many clients work with me alongside their healthcare providers, and I'm happy to collaborate with your care team.
What happens on the free discovery call?
The discovery call is a free, relaxed 30-minute conversation — no pitch, no pressure. It's a chance for us to meet, for me to hear what's going on in your life, and for you to ask any questions you have about coaching.
By the end, you'll have a clear sense of whether coaching feels like the right next step — and if it does, we'll talk about which program might be the best fit. If it's not the right time, that's completely fine too.
How do sessions work? Are they virtual or in person?
Sessions are conducted virtually via secure video call, which means you can work with me from anywhere. Each session is typically 50 minutes and scheduled at a time that works for your life.
Between sessions, I'm available for brief check-ins and support. Coaching isn't just about the hour we spend together — it's about building momentum in between.
What credentials does Nancy have?
I'm a graduate of the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA), which operates in collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine. I hold the FMCHC (Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach) credential and am pursuing NBHWC (National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching) certification.
Before coaching, I spent 35 years as a practicing attorney — experience that taught me deep listening, strategic thinking, and how to help people navigate complex situations with clarity and care.
How long are the coaching programs?
I currently offer one-on-one coaching, and small-group programs are forming now:
- One-on-One Coaching — personalized sessions, available now, entirely around your goals and pace
- What If — a 4-week small-group program with the support and accountability of a community
- The Thriving Lawyer — a 4-week group deep-dive built specifically for attorneys
Not sure which is right? That's exactly what the free discovery call is for.
Is health coaching covered by insurance?
At this time, most health insurance plans do not cover health coaching. I do not bill insurance directly. However, some clients have had success submitting receipts to their HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) for reimbursement — I'd encourage you to check with your plan.
The industry is moving toward broader recognition of health coaching, and I'm hopeful that coverage will continue to expand. In the meantime, I'm committed to making coaching accessible and will always be transparent about pricing.
What if I'm not sure which program is right for me?
That's completely normal — and it's one of the best reasons to book a free discovery call. During our conversation, I'll listen to what's going on in your life and help you figure out which program (if any) is the right fit for where you are right now.
There's no wrong answer and no pressure. Some people know exactly what they want; others just know they're ready for a change. Either way, we'll figure it out together.
Do I need a referral from a doctor to work with you?
No referral is needed. You can reach out and book a discovery call any time. That said, I love working alongside physicians, naturopaths, and other practitioners — and I'm always happy to collaborate with your existing care team if that would be helpful.
What if coaching isn't the right fit for me?
That's a fair question, and I respect it. Coaching works best when you feel ready to make a change and are willing to do the work between sessions. If after our discovery call (or even after starting a program) it doesn't feel right, I'll always be honest about that — and I'll do my best to point you toward something that is a better fit.
This is about your health and your life. There's no ego here — just genuine care for your well-being.
